On a clear night, you can see.

I untied my shoes and removed them
the crabgrass was crisp under my feet
and damp with last night's rain
the screams of seagulls echoed
as I stepped onto the beach,
eyes closed, hands folded
into fists of prayer --
there is glass here, still
sharp, with the power to cut,
and shells emptied of their
homeowners, soft murders
carried out under pain of hunger
by the sharp beaks of birds --
in this pre-dawn silence, I have
only wishes, and no hope left.
soon the sea will eat me, and
beggars will dine before I will
return from riding those waves
pale foam washing from shore to shore
after you have run me ragged
chasing the shadow of your bow.
