alasanonheliotrope blooming
(in long purple cones
like lilacs, but darker
with a sweet, honey smell
completely unlike the pallid
febrile scent of may)
fat bees hovering
(some with fur and stripes
cute, bumbling, hunting pollen
some ugly, wasps and yellow
jackets out for meat as well
as whatever flower they find)
lavender spreading
(the scent nearly over
powering, just after a rain
carefully tended or let to
run wild in the garden
soft greengray foliage spikes)
under the trees
(all the leaves in full array
maple, aspen, oak, birch,
larch, willow, apple, cherry
fruits budding, just a few weeks
more on the branch to ripen)
thinking of sunshine
(have you put on your sunscreen?
do you want to end up with
cancer of the skin? the largest
organ of your body turned into
the largest liability, unwarned)
nothing but floating
(the clouds of this season are
variable--from giants that bellow
rain to thin skeins of white
barely more than threads spooling
out across the sky)
dreaming of summer
(at last, come we to this.
the sun, the sky, the water
we have arranged our picnics
and prepared for the new
blockbusters and block parties)
a life well at ease
(thinking only of the finer
things in this life will
get you nowhere in the long
run. don't forget the bruises
on the fruit--the tangled webs.)
