...I missed it, but I'm walking backwards so I can keep an eye on the thing that is following me. It's fine if I can't see what's in front of me for a bit, isn't it? I checked before I turned around; there was nothing for the next several hundred feet at least, no cliffs, no streams, no stray branches.

Look, just because I can't identify what it is doesn't mean I shouldn't try to make sure it isn't going to pounce on me when I'm not looking.
