Hey hey it's my birth-----
2/1/22 10:37 pmWell. Yes.
It was a thankful and quiet day. I spent it playing games, reading, cuddling my cat, thinking about lunar new year festivities and rituals. I didn't wash my hair. I didn't sweep the floor. I didn't use any blades. I am more comfortable now with superstitions and rituals than I have ever been before in my life. Do I believe in the gods or monsters they're meant to appease or repel? ....Not especially, but I like the taste of mochi and red beans and I can't eat potatoes or tomatoes anymore so many of my birth culture's traditional foods are out of the question.
The last time my birthday and the new year coincided was not so long ago, relatively speaking: 2003. A space shuttle exploded. I was twenty-four, at the beginning of my second lunar astrological cycle, and the rest of that year was... mostly terrible, actually.
I feel like that may have been one of the first times I really thought of my birthday as the beginning of my personal year, giving up January as a sacrifice to the previous Gregorian calendar year. I might be wrong, it might have been before that, but I feel like that was certainly a turning point in my life.
The next time these two things will occur on the same day is in 2041. I'll be sixty-two (hopefully), two years from a Beatles song, and by then, the last two will be gone. I wonder what the world will look like then?
I hope it'll be better than it is now. I have to keep hoping, no matter what.
(as an aside, next week I'll probably be doped up on painkillers and pudding with gaping holes in my mouth. I'm looking forward to it, but also really, really not. So here is my backdated post amnesty in advance.)
