the hurry she was in

to grow up, she thought
would solve her problems
to be considered an adult
would keep her safe from
the discriminatory acts
of her peers, of strangers--
would bar the wolves, howling,
from the steps up to her door
yes, at six, she thought
adults were sacred and safe
secure, and perhaps holy
she held them up as talismans
before her, allowed them access
to her childish innocent dreams
and trusted deep and truly
that they would never harm her
